PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST...
BERWICK will be represented by former Sheffield man Lee Complin in Sunday's Premier League Riders Championship at Owlerton - with Adrian Rymel and Michal Makovsky missing out due to injury.
Super7even co-ordinator David Hoggart said: "The addition of Lee will only add spice to what is an already very exciting line-up. Who can forget his win in the Garry Stead meeting here? He could be a threat on Sunday."
BIRMINGHAM are bracing themselves for a double clash with Newcastle, having been drawn against the Diamonds in both the Knockout Cup and promotion play-off semi-finals.
Boss Graham Drury said: "I know there’s a lot been said and written about how they beat us comfortably in the Premier Trophy final but this is a different situation. We’ve got our best reserve (Chris Kerr) coming back and facing Newcastle again doesn’t worry me one bit. I say bring them on."
EDINBURGH chairman Alex Harkess has explained the Monarchs selected Sheffield in the semi-finals of the promotion play-offs as they are confident of scoring heavily at home against the Tigers.
Harkess said: "We've beaten Birmingham, Newcastle and Sheffield at home and away this year. However, we feel that we have the best chance of building a big home total against the Tigers. We're not taking anything for granted. Teams reaching the top four in the league have got their on merit and we'll give the Tigers the respect they deserve."
GLASGOW are waiting to confirm a date for the re-arrangement of their home fixture against Sheffield which was rained-off last weekend.
The Tigers are already out of the Young Shield places, having missed out in their vital away matches at King's Lynn and Rye House, but they will face fierce rivals Edinburgh in the Scottish Cup next month.
KING'S LYNN star Kozza Smith feels the Stars still have the potential to finish a difficult season on a high.
Smith told edp24.co.uk: "You have to remember this is a new team which has only been together about a month. We're still gelling but I think the Young Shield is looking good and we will be going to win. Once we start winning some home matches that builds confidence and you can take that away from home."
NEWCASTLE completed a terrific season of home results with a 58-36 win over King's Lynn on Monday, with the Diamonds now looking forward to the Knockout Cup and the play-offs after securing second place in the table.
Manager George English said: "Once again we hammered home a dominant win over a good side and in doing so have recorded the best home record in this year’s Premier League. But more importantly at this stage of the season it was an excellent match with some great racing and incident, and in that King’s Lynn have to take a good deal of credit for that too."
NEWPORT kept up their impressive home form with a 57-35 win over Rye House on Sunday, and could well be a major threat in the Young Shield after a positive run of results in recent weeks, with Canadian star Kyle Legault scoring especially well.
REDCAR will track a Select side this Thursday in a home clash with Team Viking, who include several talented young riders for their trip to the South Tees Motorsport Park.
Bears boss Brian Havelock said: "'This is something different for our fans, but again it is a chance to see emerging talent in the world of Speedway. Our own Peter Juul put his marker down for a team spot after good performances for the Vikings in the Summer. It will also be interesting to compare the young Brits in our select against the young Scandinavians in the opposition."
RYE HOUSE boss John Sampford is expecting a tough encounter when his side face arch-rivals King's Lynn, the Rockets having chosen to face the Stars in the quarter-finals of the Young Shield.
Sampford said: "There is always a needle atmosphere when we meet the Stars. We’ve worked hard for the No.1 seeding over the whole League programme, but the timing could obviously be much better, with Robbie Kessler retired and Paul Starke now out with a broken collarbone. As always, though, we’ll take it race by race over the thirty, and give it our best shot."
SCUNTHORPE have scrapped plans to bring in a new rider for their Young Shield fixtures, and have stated that Redcar duo Peter Juul Larsen and Tomas Suchanek will come into the equation to guest for the injured Jerran Hart.
Promoter Rob Godfrey said: "They are my preferred guests, but it depends if they are in the country and available. It will be a help rather than bringing someone new in. Someone new won't have been to these tracks, whereas these riders have and will know the set-up from the beginning."
SHEFFIELD co-promoter David Hoggart says the Tigers will be doing everything they can to shock league champions Edinburgh when the two sides clash in the semi-finals of the promotion play-offs.
Hoggart said: "We’re pleased to have been able to qualify for the top four, it’s a fine effort by the boys after a tough start to the season.
“The lads deserve a lot of credit for what they’ve achieved so far and hopefully we can round the season off in style.”
SOMERSET have opted to face Scunthorpe in the Young Shield with the first leg set for the Oak Tree Arena on Friday October 1, and the return fixture the following night.
Co-promoter Debbie Hancock said: "It is unfortunate that we have to leave this coming Friday blank, but given that it wasn’t until Tuesday lunch-time before it was decided as to who would be facing who, it left us no time to organise everything in order to stage the first leg this Friday and we would prefer to give our fans sufficient notice of the match rather than it be a last minute thing.”
STOKE have re-arranged their final Premier League fixture of the season against Newport for this Saturday after the meeting was rained-off last weekend.
Promoter Dave Tattum said: "We've arranged the meeting for this Saturday as we want to keep the lads race fit for the Young Shield play offs, rather than most of them having a two week break without a meeting. We are on a good run at the moment after our victories over Berwick and Rye House here the other weekend and we want to keep the momentum going into the play offs."
WORKINGTON bosses thanked supporters for turning out in far from ideal conditions for the Comets' Knockout Cup semi-final against Edinburgh, with the Monarchs going through in a meeting curtailed after twelve heats due to the rain.
