PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST...
BERWICK are making preparations for their traditional big end-of-season individual meeting, the Bordernapolis, which takes place on Saturday October 23.
American star Ryan Fisher and Australians Travis McGowan and Ty Proctor are definite starters along with James Wright, Tero Aarnio, Craig Branney and Joe Haines.
BIRMINGHAM boss Graham Drury will be motivating his riders for a big push in an attempt to turn around a 23-point first leg deficit in Wednesday's KO Cup semi-final against Newcastle.
Drury said: "This could be the last chance for the supporters to come out and see their team in action this season. Obviously we hope that won’t be the case and we will be doing all we can to turn around the deficit. Our boys will be fired up."
EDINBURGH overcame a 16-point first leg deficit to get the better of fierce rivals Glasgow in the Scottish Cup, taking the silverware by a seven-point aggregate margin.
Monarchs chief Alex Harkess said: "We’ve achieved a lot this season but it is always nice to come out on top in a derby. We showed a lot of determination."
KING'S LYNN boss Buster Chapman is anxious to move up the Premier League table with wins in the Stars' last two fixtures against Newport and Newcastle.
Chapman said: "Newport are a good team and have won their last six matches on the bounce so it should be a cracker but I believe we are good enough to overcome them and gain all three league points so we can move another place up the league. It is important to me that we do that because personally I do not want the history books to say we finished more than half way down the league after having so much success in the past few years!"
NEWCASTLE boss George English was delighted with the outcome of Sunday's double-header against Birmingham, with the Diamonds booking their play-off Final spot and building up a 23-point first leg KO Cup semi-final lead.
English said: "The team pulled well together once they got to grips with the night and did exactly what was needed in each match, with them just managing to win by sufficient in the play-offs and then put in a decent sized win in the Cup to take to Birmingham on Wednesday."
NEWPORT overcame Berwick to reach the semi-finals of the Young Shield and will now face Rye House - with the first leg at the Hayley Stadium this Friday evening.
Wasps stalwart Craig Watson said: "'We have got to keep up the winning mentality that we have developed since mid-season. I was always confident that we had a good side and stated that opinion consistently. We must take the opportunity to gain an advantage from the first leg as the Rockets can be pretty impressive at their tight and demanding circuit."
RYE HOUSE'S reward for a tense 94-88 Young Shield success over arch rivals King’s Lynn is a Semi-Final tie against Newport - and despite losing Kyle Hughes to injury against the Stars, Rye captain Chris Neath remains upbeat about the Rockets’ Final Four prospects.
He said: “People wrote us off completely pre-season, but we are fifth in the League table. We may not have been quite as dominant at home as in recent years, but the boys have knuckled down and got their heads into gear now, and we’re ready for one more push."
SCUNTHORPE have signed 18-year-old Danish rider Thomas Jorgensen on a full contract for the Scorpions in 2011.
Jorgensen defeated a strong field to win the club's inaugural Rob Woffinden Memorial Shield last Friday, ahead of Rye House's Ben Morley and another Danish rider Patrick Tarp.
SHEFFIELD star Ricky Ashworth says the Tigers are in great spirits ahead of the first leg of the promotion play-off Final against Newcastle on Thursday.
Ashworth said: "After what we did against Edinburgh it just underlines that anything can happen, that was an amazing night and we’re buzzing as a team right now. We know Newcastle are a good side, they’ve got a lot of strength at the top end of their team but we know we can match them around our own track and I fancy us to be the stronger all-round side at Sheffield."
SOMERSET boss Steve Bishop says the Rebels restored some pride with their sterling Young Shield fightback against Scunthorpe, winning the second leg 65-29 after facing an initial 50-point deficit.
Bishop said: "I doubt if many people would have believed ahead of the meeting that it would have taken Scunthorpe until Heat 12 to assure themselves of the aggregate victory, but that's how close we took them as we ran up our biggest home win of the season. I was immensely proud of each and every one of the team."
STOKE boss Malcolm Vasey says his focus is now firmly on 2011 after the Potters were dumped out of the Young Shield by holders Workington at the quarter-final stage.
Vasey said: "It has been a difficult season for us through one thing and another and we now have to turn out attentions to team building for next season."
WORKINGTON will continue their defence of the Young Shield with a semi-final clash against Scunthorpe, starting at Derwent Park on Saturday - and the two teams could be perfectly matched!
Comets boss Ian Thomas said: "I’m looking forward to the two semi-final clashes with Scunthorpe because on what we saw in the League there’s nothing to choose between the two teams. We won 56-36 at Derwent Park and 24 hours later the Scorpions beat us by exactly the same score at their place."
