Posted this on old forum just before the plug was pulled - hope it wasn't all my fault! The subject of rider's averages and their manipulation seems to cause a deal of controversy and debate. A rider can at present manipulate his average to make it more attractive to promoters simply by having one or two 'nightmare' meetings in a season. I know it sounds absurd, but it could happen! In other sports where averages are crucial (usually scoring systems) they tend to disregard extreme scores, normally top and bottom, and produce an average from 'normal' scores. So, for example, in a season of 34 matches a rider's 4 lowest scoring meetings would be disregarded and an average produced from the remaining 30. Thus eliminating the effect of unusually low scores. Simple! So can anybody enlighten me as to whether a similar system has been tried before, and if not, why not?
